Can you trim/cut shorter a St. Bernards dog hair. Any web sites recommending how to care for their c

I heard it is not recommended due to their sensitive skin, however even with brushing out the dead undercoat, there is still so much thick fur left on them...

i just brush my saints for about 15 minutes everyday and that keeps their coats in good nic, if they are to warm in this weather then give then a soak with the hose, or fill a childs swmming pool and let them lye in it, i do this with mine because the do over heat after a walk and it helps cool them down, they seem to injoy it. you can trim their hair because i trim mines hair between the toes and round their ears

Well, it's better shave the st. Bernard because it's a lot easier to do

In hotter climates, I've seen many people who are St. Bernard owners, take their dogs to the groomers to trim their coats, for then the heat doesn't affect them as much.

Quite honestly, trimming the coat of a St. Bernard (or other dogs with long, thick coats) Actually disrupts their ability to regulate their own body temperatures. Best bet would be to groom them 2-3 times a day, once with an undercoat rake, and keep them cool by hosing them down with cool (not cold) water.

you should never shave a dog's coat. it messes up their ability to regulate their body temperate.

a dogs coat protects them from the elements....be it heat or cold. making sure the dogs heavy under coat is removed, that is shed during the summer is really all the maintenance you need to do; although St Bernard's shed twice a year.

they are dogs..not ppl, their bodies and even fur were designed to cope with the climate changes...course a nice dip in the pool/lake would hurt either.

This doesn't answer your question, but is an excellent site with input from other owners. http://www.saintbernardclub.org/bathe_sa...

I only wish they had this tool when I had Great Pyrenees! Click on the pic of the Golden retriever to watch the video. My groomer uses it on my dog, and charges extra, but it sure thins the coat, and leaves it very nice.

No you do not cut it shorter. The undercoat will shed out on its own, if you brush it. Then it will be fine. They are a coated breed. Even the smooth coat is thick. Remember they were used in the SNOW!!!!! Dogs with coats should keep them!!!! Just brush and brush at this time of year.
