How to control excessive dog hair shedding?
My German Shepherd had an excessive shedding problem. I found with her that it seemed to be a nutritional imbalance (and you'll find that most of the time, that is the case. Only rarely is it a disease).
My suggestion would be to feed your dog Omega-3 Fish Oils. You can either get the soft pills from the grocery store (that's what I do, because it's cheaper and my dog likes them just in her food) or you can get a squirt-on supplement if your dog doesn't like pills (like this: http://www.k9power.com/omega_dog.php). You can also feed them tuna or sardines, though that gives them bad breath and not as much fish oil.
Omega-3s really helps dogs that seem to be losing hair everywhere. It'll also make their coats very shiny and soft, and you'll find people marveling over how gorgeous your dog's coat is and how soft they feel. (It's true!) I feed my dog one 1200 mg pill a day.
Another suggestion would be to look at changing the food you're feeding to something of higher quality. Most grocery store dog foods just don't have the right nutrients to keep your dog's coat looking good and keeping together. You might try Solid Gold dog food (a little on the expensive side, but well worth it) it has proper nutritional value and human grade ingredients... it will also help if your dog is allergic to something in their current food and that's why they're shedding. Solid Gold makes their stuff out of lamb, bison, salmon, etc and they avoid the common allergens found in most dog foods.
The best thing you could do would be to try both things at once! But, if you have to pick one or the other, I would say start with the fish oil, then change foods if that doesn't seem to help.
Good luck!

There's certainly no stopping dog shedding, but as far as controlling it - the only thing I've found to work, is just to brush your dog each day (outside or somewhere where it will be easy to clean up the hair). The more you brush it - the more loose, dead hair you are removing and the less likely you are to get those hairs all over your house, clothes, etc.
They make some good brushes you can buy that look like blades - there is also a brush on the market called the furminator which is supposed to work miracles. Check it out:

unless you plan on brushing 4 times a day everyday, then dont get the furminter. it is extremely overrated and while it does work to some extent, there are tools that are much more efficeint. what kind of brush/tool depends on the type of dog you have. but an undercoat rake is perfect fr any dog with undercoat. if you really want to get rid of the hair and have some money to spend, then get a high velocity dryer that will blow away the loose hair. just dont waste your money on a furminater.

We brush our crew out on the patio so the loose hair falls outside, we also use a shedding blade. I would also look at your dogs food if you think he is losing hair more than normal.

Daily brushing and quality nutrition helps control shedding. If it is excessive shedding have your vet check the dogs thyroid.
