Best vacuum for wood floors and lots of dog hair?

We go through a vacuum about every 8 months - between 3 long haired dogs, a cat and 2 people - lots of hair - and then the wood floors have sand that when vacuumed, shoots out the back of the vacuum and hits me in the legs! Every vacuum we get becomes ineffective after a year max. Is it worth spending a fortune on a top of the line vacuum (will that really solve the problem of the backfiring dirt and the loss of suction after a year?). We usually get vacuums around the $100 range - would stepping it up to an expensive one mean it should last longer? Also, always get upright with hepa filter and dirt cup. Do cannisters work better?

We use a shop vac and buy the bag filters for the inside. No blow back, dirt and pet hair go in the bag just like a regular vac, and it can be used all over the house. Doesn't mark up the wood floors, either. Works just as well getting the hair off furniture, carpets, etc. Just LOVE the shop vac. We've had ours for 9 years now with no loss of suction, nothing is wrong with it. Still works like a charm.

And while we are talking vacuums - I use my swivel sweeper all the time...

Good luck

You need a $5 broom... not another vacuum.

I got a Dyson animal vac which I love and would get another in a heartbeat. I've had mine now for two years, and I have two german shepherd's who have lots of hair. It works as good today as it did on the day I bought it. It sucks up everything and anything. I have recommended it to several of my friends with pets and they also love theirs. It is a bit pricy (we got ours at Linens and Things on sale for $450.00) but it was worth every penny.

Got one of those upright Sharks with hepa %26amp; dirt cup. Have hardwood floors through entire house (2 floors)....it works great, although I do find I have to empty canister too fast. I pass Swifter afterwards, just in case.

Wonder if that Dyson would be even better!

get a rainbow, in initial cost is high but it has a 30 year warranty, all the sand hair and dirt stays in the base until you dump it. it is low maintenance and doubles as an air purifier. we have a long hair cat and short hair dog that sheds from spring to winter. best investment ever made for cleaning

We just use a regular vacuum which doesn't work that well, but I know people with a Dyson animal vacuum and they love it. They are more expensive, but everyone I know says they are definitely worth it

I live and die for my Dyson "animal" yes...that's what it's called and it is expensive but I bought mine on line "refurbished" for about $350 and have had it almost 5 years. Look it up on the internet and yes it is well worth the money!!! Contact me if you have any questions!! Good luck! We've had a litter (8) of black lab pups 3 labs and now a brittany spaniel....
