Itchy and hair loss on a dog. help?

Hi all i am hoping that somone will be able to help me out on this.

My dog is just over 2 yrs old. He is a pitty x bulldog.

Over the last few months he has been quiet itchy always biting himself.

We use frontline for fleas, so that is not the answer.

Since he has been itching he started loosing his hair, Started at the base of the tail and in between his back legs. And now on his head.

It is not really a scab as such more like really dry flaky skin,

Taken him to a vet when 1st noticed it they didn't know what it was.

Now it is worse, I don't want him to loose all him hair and be unhappy.

He is a inside dog we have other animals and we have a 1 yr old so i hope that we can't catch it.

Nothing has change in his life bar our son being born 1 yr ago but as i said this started a few months back.

I have used a maliban wash on him and that didn't help.

Any suggestions? Please help.

could be fleas, could be an allergy to the frontline, could be you bathed him with flea stuff too often and dried his skin out, could be mange though most likely the vet would have caught that, also sometimes dogs get skin allergies and food allergies can also sometimes cause this.

You know....I have a Black Lab/Chow mix and he had the same problem just last summer and has since just not too long ago has grown his hair back....Your dog may have allergies....try some benedryl(?), i've given it to my dog...it helps a little.......with my dog though i believe that it was a tad allergies, then the natural itchy skin...does your dog have any kind of flea?? Well, good luck with that and i know how frustrated you must be....and rest assured that it's nothing that another dog can catch.....

its a fungal infection (cuold be a bacterial infection, but probably not).

there are a million types of fungal infections, and humans can catch some of them.

Get him to a vet.

Corn and wheat cause skin problems

Read the food labels and switch to ones without corn and wheat.

Innova, California Natural, Wellness, Canidae, and Artemis are great. All have websites.

it sounds like it may be a fungal type problem. Try Selsone Blue shampoo for humanes on him and let it sit for 10 min, I would also consider changing his food to a Holistic blend with no wheat or corn. He may even be allergic to the frontline.

I am no VET but i can say that my cavalier who is 1 and a bit, did suffer from dry itchy skin. We were advised to use natural shampoo/conditioner. We began using 'Aloveen oatmeal' range and noticed a difference. Now she is so soft and cuddly and the she isn't as itchy or flaky as before.

This is a short description about the product:

"Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo %26amp; Conditioner aid in soothing and cleansing itchy dry skin on dogs and cats. ALOVEEN shampoo contains oatmeal and does not contain any irritating soaps and is pH balanced.ALOVEEN's soothing properties are derived form the anti-itch effects of oatmeal. ALOVEEN leave on conditioner is a unique residual conditioner designed to leave on the coat for deeper conditioning and to prolong the soothing effects ALOVEEN shampoo.

Active ingredients: Oatmeal extract, Aloe Vera.

Presentation: Shampoo 250ml, Conditioner 100ml."

Hope this helps (AND PLEASE DO NOT use any human based shampoos/products as mentioned above)

But if all else fails, get a second opinion since your vet doesn't have a clue. GOOD LUCK

He has allergies or a skin viraul infection or a bacterial infection. If this keeps going on consult a vet and they will give you special shampoo and a creame to put on your dog!

There are so many things it could be.

Mange

allergies

dermatitis

sebborhea

It is so hard to diagnose skin problems in dogs. You can try a supplement high in essential fatty acids, and bathe him in a medicated shampoo for skin problems. Tea Tree Oil shampoo works really well. My dog has had undiagnosed skin problems for years. It's frustrating because no one can diagnose it. She has been on prednisone for years, and we have tried so many different things, to no avail.

Good luck with this problem. Hopefully someone can figure out what the problem is.
